In the last few years we've seen a flood of story-heavy roleplaying games, but the genre has a problem. While it's gotten better, it's still difficult to really have depth. And that's what happens when the main thing you need to do is tell a story. All the little secrets and random events are just window dressing. You can be in character all day, doing whatever your character does when they're not on a quest, but eventually you'll have to end the story, and the whole thing is based on the premise that the player doesn't know what's going to happen. They don't know how the story will end, so they don't know when to act, so the action is random. That makes for a game that has no difficulty and feels meaningless. It is a deep problem in the genre, and it's hurting a lot of people, but it's also a huge opportunity. This is the year that we'll see a bunch of games that don't give a shit about the format or the formula, they just want to tell the story. And it's a pretty good time to be a fan of that type of storytelling.
